The Leica M set the parameters for standard focal lengths — 28, 35, 50, 75, 90. The 40mm VM Nokton is thus an odd one out by historic standards. Leica did experiment with 40mm on the original CL but it didn't catch on. Now, however, the attractions of a middle road — the meat in the sandwich between 35mm and 50mm — are becoming apparent. And with electronic viewfinders the old frameline problem disappears.
